Interest / Preference Inventories

Interest "tests" won't tell you what you should be, but the kind of work you may want to explore.

Several assessments are readily available to help you better understand your interests and career preferences. They are the Strong Interest Inventory, the Myers-BriggsType Indicator (MBTI), and the Career Exploration Inventory (CEI). The Strong and MBTI are two widely used assessments offered in the context of a career counseling session. They are taken online. You must call ahead for an appointment. Modest fees are charged to non-fulltime students and alumni to help allay the cost of their purchase and scoring.

The CEI is a great start-up, paper-pencil tool you can pick up in our office. It is a self-scoring and self-interpreting assessment. In addition to surveying interests, this instrument offers the chance to do some planning in the areas of work, leisure, and learning. The CEI is available upon request in Career Services.
